Observation Narrative
The plot occupies the gently sloping back portion of a narrow alluvial floodplain at foot of bluff bordering the Potomac River, 0.2 mi southeast of Balls Bluff Regional Cemetery. An adjacent, slightly higher levee and steeply sloping riverbank support somewhat different forest vegetation heavily dominated by Acer saccharinum and Urtica dioica ssp. gracilis. Although its foliage was brown and somewhat withered, more than 50% of the plot was covered by the spring ephemeral Mertensia virginica even at this late date.
